Contacts: Do and Don’t

Wearing contact lenses are a great alternative to always wearing eyeglasses. When fitted properly, they give you the comfort and freedom to see the world without obstruction.

Contacts are also quite easy to maintain, as long as you take care of them properly. This will help you reduce the risk for serious eye infections and any possible complications.

Follow these tips to protect your eyes and avoid any critical eye issues:

DO:

  • Do wash your hands before handling contact lenses to reduce the risk of an eye infection
  • Do use fresh solution each night
  • Do replace your contact lens case every 3 to 6 months
  • Do clean, rinse and air dry your lens case every time your lenses are removed; your lens case can be a source for bacterial growth
  • Do follow the directions of your optometrist; they are the professionals in eye care and can give you the best advice on how to properly take care of your contacts
  • Do contact your eye care professional if your eyes become itchy, red or watery
  • Do carry a pair of glasses with you just in case you have to take out your contacts for any reason

DON’T:

  • Don’t sleep in your contact lenses unless approved by your eye care professional
  • Don’t use contact lenses (or cases) longer than recommended
  • Don’t just top off your contact lens solution; it needs to be emptied completely before refilling. Leftover solution after disinfecting is actually considered “dirty”
  • Don’t clean your contacts with saliva or any type of water; use only saline or disinfecting solutions for rinsing
  • Don’t share contact lenses
  • Don’t wear your lenses if you are sick; wear your eyeglasses instead
